I have an Manitowoc sd0602a ice machine that will not fill with water.the left bin light is the only light on.what could be the problem?

My NEO undercounter Ice Machine just started making thick ice cubes.

The cubes in the tray are ok but the back part of the ice cubes that normally break when they fall in the bin are so thick that they do not break when they fall.

It just started doing this and I put a leveler on it and all is level. I cleaned the machine and still thick ice cubes/

I am working on a manitowoc ice machine BY0204A. As far as i have been told it stopped making ice and it has not been ran in at least a few months or more. As of last night i had gotten it up and running and producing ice. It never had any issues as far as its sequence of operation. Everything has always started and stopped as it is supposed to. This morning i went to just basically finish it up checkingits charge and other little things since it had been such a hassle getting it up and running again. Someone had opened it up and turned it on…now the water pump will not shut off at all. It just runs contantly. It even stays on if you turn the machines switch to off. The only way it stops is if you disconnect it. Any ideas as to what can be causing this. Everything else is functioning properly.

My ice machine fan keeps changing speeds. Mostly slow then kicking up high for just a few seconds and back down. It’s not producing much. I’m wondering if it’s the fan, whatever controls the fan speed, or something I haven’t thought of. Any thoughts? Thank you.

I’ve got a Kenmore Coldspot icemaker that has recently started making quite a bit of noise during ice production. I’ve run the nickel safe cleaning solution thru a few times in a row to try and get any of the buildup off as well as manually scrubbing the parts I could access by hand etc.(I took the pump out and manually cleaned it as well as possible and also gently scrubbed the cutting grid) Generally after turning off the machine for a few hours and then restarting the machine operates quietly but after say 4 hours or so of operation it starts making the noises again. (the noise sounds like a chugging or marching every second or so) It still produces ice but I’m afraid that it may be putting stress on the critical components if the problem isnt resolved. The first few batches of ice are also clear but then over time (probably when it starts chugging again) the ice gets cloudy. Do you have any insight as to what direction I should go with this?

I recently bought a used Manitowoc QD1002A Ice Machine, Installed it per the manual, started it up, and it made ice , filled up the bin with no problem. Now it will not freeze any water going over the evaporator. and eventually cuts off. Ive checked the magnet on the curtain and the light goes on and off when I open and close it. Also, if I flip the toggle switch off and back to Ice , the bottom light flashes one time on the control board. Ive checked everything that I can think of, any suggestions?

I have a GYO214A Manitowic Under the Counter Ice Maker. Sometimes it stops working. What happens is that it runs and everything appears to be working fine. Water runs across the ice maker, ice starts to form and then the whole thing just shuts off. If I flip the ice thickness probe and the damper to make it think it dropped the ice, it will kick back on again and run for a short time then shut off again. When I first come in in the morning and it’s not working, I turn the switch to off and then on and it will start up. At this point it will only run about 15 seconds and shut off. But if I flip those things and it starts back up, it will run about 5 minutes each time I get it going again. Everything seems to be working properly, it just doesn’t run long enough to make ice. I haven’t figured out what triggers it to start working again, but when it does it will run for a week and up to a couple months before it happens again.

I have a Manitowoc QM30 ice machine in my corporate office kitchen. It is producing large thick blocks of ice. Since yesterday, it is no longer separating into individual ice cubes. Can you please give me an idea of what can be done to correct this?

I have a Manitowoc QM30 it has been working fine for the 3 years I have had it. All of a sudden it stopped making ice completely. No ice forms on the evaporator, and it does not feel cold at all, otherwise it seems to be operating normally. I have cleaned and sanitized the machine according to the instructions which did not solve the problem. I do not see anything on the technical document that addresses this problem. Any idea how to troubleshoot this problem?

I have a Manitowoc UY190A undercounter cuber. The problem it has is the ice thickness is not consistent. Many times it comes out fine, but we are also getting some that are over 1/2 inch thick and I can’t figure out why. I have tried to adjust the thickness but the result is the same at all three adjustment points. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

I’d love to have an opinion on a Manitowoc ice maker if you would please. I have a QM30A at my church. Recently we notice that the water was not shutting off, presumably while filling for a load of ice. It was still making ice, just would not stop the water running. Is this unit worth fixing? Should I use a repair tech to fix it? Or, is it a dirty float or something that could be cleaned? Or, could I order a replacement part that could fix the problem. Thanks for any answer you can give for my problem.

Hello I have a qd0452 model. The evaporator plate only makes ice in the lower half of the plate. I was wondering if you could help me with the troubleshooting.

Installed a SM50A after a year stored, problem is too much water comes out of the nozzles and takes too long to make ice. I have checked the cap and insert and they look fine. Dont really know how much water is supposed to be sprayed. What can be the problem?

@Gregg, I’ll be happy to help. However, I need more information in regards to what you mean by ‘shutting down’. Is it going off on a safety limit, is it powering down completely, does the machine think it’s full? When it quits making ice, are there any lights on the control board? If there are, what are they and are they flashing? Typically the flashing lights will indicate a safety limit was met, helping us diagnose what the problem might be.

@JDM, have you thoroughly cleaned the machine with metal safe cleaner? Stuck ice is typically caused by a dirty evaporator, scale build up cannot be seen while it’s wet and must be dried out for inspection. We recommend regular cleanings, more frequently is bad water areas.

Next, check to make sure the evaporator is not pitting or discolored, this could be a sign that the evaporator plating is bad and needs replaced.

I have a SM50 that does not drop the ice consistently. A few cubes will drop but the majority remain and it begins to form a block. I need to power it off to allow it drop. Any help is appreciated.

My Q280 Manitowoc ice machine will make a couple of cycles of ice then stop.
If I turn it off or to clean then turn it on it will work for a few more times but them stop again.

@Steve, make sure the spray bar didn’t come loose during shipping. The SM50 uses a water assist harvest, so if it’s came lose and pointing too far forward, this would explain the problems you describe.

@Ivan, I’d like to help more. What is the model number of your ice machine?

@Greg, make sure you have the filter securely in place. If it’s not turned and ‘locked’ into position the machine will bypass. Also, it’s not recommended to run ice machines on well water, it will certainly struggle to work consistently without cleaning all the time.

Recently started up my sm50 out of a three year storage and seemed to work fine but appears inlet water is bypassing the new filter that was installed before restart. Seeing iron stains as the well water has a fairly high iron concentration. Removed the new filter (k00374) and is dry as a bone without any evidence water is cycling through. Any ideas why the filter is being bypassed????

I just purchased and installed the SM50A ice machine, when I turned it on it made two trays of ice fine but no more. The next tray failed to harvest and there is a lot of ice build up on it,
Also there seems to be a lot of water spray out the curtain in front. I removed the stay novels to be sure all is lined up and clear but have the same issue still not sure what to do next before calling them any advice would be appreciated

Machine has been working great for almost two years (light use in a church). However, after last routine maintenance (every 6 months with Manitowoc cleaner/sanitizer), machine will not continually make ice. Machine is plugged in, one cycle completes and then it stops. Touch pad is non-responsive until I cycle power using plug. Please help.

I have an under the counter(5 yrs old?) Manitowoc UY130 that is acting up. It’s been cleaned and sanitized and has a new water filter.After switching the machine on, 2-4 seconds later the compressor kicks in. Within another 5-10 seconds the pump starts and water flows over the evaporator to begin making ice. The machine runs for 1-2 minutes then shuts off. I can restart the machine and it repeats the same problem. I took the front cover off to check the coil for dirt but it was fine. I blew it out with compressed air anyway. Any ideas or suggestions??

Hi I have a manitoc SY0604A, it seems to be freezing odd shape cubes also the bottom half is on giant thick ice sheet while the top is not doing any ice. plus it runs all day with no significant amount of ice. the machine supposed to do about 600 pounds a day. Please help

@mitch, the probes on the Indigo can be damaged. I would recommend replacement of the ice thickness control to see if that fixes your problem. There is a number of tests that you can perform on the machine, but in my experience, the probe is one of the first pieces to be replaced on the Indigo. You can also contact Kitchen Care for more assistance and help in further diagnosing the more technical Indigo cubers.

Lynn I have a mod # IY0304A-161 ice machine it initialy gave us too long of freeze and/or too long of havest cycles leaving us wih either no ice or a solid block incasing the thickness control. we removed the unit brought it down to the shop now it goes in to the safe mode but doesn’t kick out an error code. at first we thought it was recycling the condensor heat from the unit of the other pop machine but the shop is a constant 68 deg.

@lynn thanks for the help…had someone come in to help with the bin switch but it was actually the plastic face had a crack in it and that is why the magnet was not matching up with the bin switch and it was turning itself off…thanks again

@Greg, if there are literally NO lights on the board when you come in(bin switch light, harvest light …), then it’s shut off on a high limit. This is typically caused by getting too hot. Is there something being shut off at night that would cause this machine to over heat?

@lynn, we have only noticed it when I go in in the morning and no there are no lights on the control board when I look. when I go in is when I fill all the bins and notice that it does not start making more ice. so that’s when I run it through a clean cycle and then it turns back on. then when we closing, the ice bin is usually still running. then come in in the morning and the ice bin is full but all lights are off. so you are thinking we will need is a new bin switch.

@Greg, When you check on it in the morning, are there any lights on the control board? If not, I suspect it’s shutting down due to a high limit possibly. Does this only happen at night? It’s possibly you have a failing bin switch, but I’d lean towards this being a problem at other times, not just when you guys leave.

so lately our ice machine, model #QY0454A, has been powering of at night while we are closed. when I come in and open it up there are no lights on. I try unplugging it first for 10 minutes then 30 and then an hour but nothing happens after turning it back on. the only way that it works again is to run it through a clean cycle. is there anything in particular that could be causing this. thanks

@Bruce, I suppose it’s possible, but unlikely the board is causing this. You should check your voltage coming into the machine.

I have a Model# QYO134A. It seems to be having power surge problem. The compreser & pump & fan, all slow way down & then pick back up. After about 2 or 3 cycles this starts & after about 6 cycles shuts down. Could the board cause this?

@gerald, what is the complete model of your ice machine? There should be a 2 letters in front of the 1004A number. Let me know, along with which board you replaced.

Other than that, you can also check to make sure you are getting voltage at the right time.

i have a model1004a and does not cycle at all the harvest light stays on 90% of the time . i replaced the board and know the the red light is off but now the pump runs all the time and inlet water valve does not fill the holding tank i don’t know any thing to check. Can you help!

Recently purchased a QM30A under counter series, used, and the only thing that comes on when I turn on the switch in either direction is the compressor. Pump and fan aren’t coming on. Was wondering if the fan is supposed to come on right away and also if there is some kind of float that could be sticking that’s keeping the pump from coming on?

Thanks for the response Lynn! So I was able to get the machine to turn on. I first ran it through clean mode and water began to flow down the cooling grill. After about a minute or so I switched the toggle to the off position, reinstalled everything, then toggled it to the ice position. The machine began to work and water is flowing down the cooling grill. However, the clean light remains on as well as the left bin light. Occasionally the water probe light will switch on. The machine is still currently running but I don’t feel the cooling grill getting any colder.

@Silas, first try turning off the power to your ice machine, then turning it back on. Then, when you toggle your switch to ice, watch the inside of the machine and indicate of any of your components turn on. Check the water inlet valve, dump valve, compressor, water pump, whatever. Let me know if anything runs.

I have the model SD0304 and it has recently shut off. I’ve toggeled the ICE/OFF/CLEAN switch and have found that when I switch the toggle to the ICE position the SL-1 light blinks once then shuts off. I’m not sure what to do. Thanks for your help!

@Ron, that is a telltale sign of a dirty evaporator. I know you said it was cleaned, but did someone use a soft nylon brush and actually scrub inside the cavities of the evaporator. The scale that causes the problems you describe cannot be seen unless the evaporator is completely dry. When wet it looks perfectly clean. If you are sure it has been scrubbed, with nickel safe cleaner, and something not to scratch the evaporator, have you looked for pitting or plates separating?

@Ryan, that sounds like a refrigeration component is failing. I’m leaning towards a leaking TXV, but cannot be for certain based on the information provided. In this case I would recommend having a trained refrigeration technician look at the ice machine.

I have a modular ice machine that is not making ice. Last night it ran a freezing cycle that took nearly an hour before harvesting the ice and it was a very thin and wet batch of ice. Upon returning to work this morning my ice machine was no longer running (shut itself off for a safety limit I assume). I turned it off and back on. It started up. Everything is running (compressor, fans, water trickling over evaporator) and the water gets very cold, but no ice ever forms on the evaporator. After running for 60 minutes it goes into harvest but has no ice to drop so it restarts a new freezing cycle. The same thing continues until it reaches it’s safety limit of attempts on making ice. Help?

I HAVE A Q-SERIES UNDER THE COUNTER MACHINE. THIS MACHINE HAS BEEN WORKING GREAT UP UNTIL THE

@Laura, if you are sure the machine is clean and that there are good probes installed, specifically the ice thickness, then you might want to check your toggle switch. What you describe can be caused by the switch failing or a weird grounding problem in the machine or even back to the breaker box.

Even though it makes 2 good batches of ice, it might benefit you to also time the cycles, just to see if there was a problem waiting to trip the safety limit. Time the freeze cycle, then when it initiates harvest, time the harvest cycle. Let me know if you have any other questions or what you find out, I’d be happy to assist further.

I have a Manitowoc S series ice machine. It has worked well for 3 years.
But now, it will make a couple batches of good ice, then suddenly, in the freeze cycle, the water drains from the trough instead of flowing over the evaporator, causing the evap. To frost over.

I would say that the dump valve is stuck, but why would it work correctly through 2 cycles? And work correctly during a cleaning?

The machine has been thoroughly cleaned… I keep spare water and thickness probes, so both have been replaced. The lights all work correctly, and no safety limit lights are blinking (possibly because I shut if off before the machine shuts itself off?).

@Anthony, I’d be happy to help. The very first rule of thumb, is not to put gauges on an ice machine, unless it’s your last option.(especially on an undercounter) These machines are critically charged, so even putting hoses on a machine will cause incorrect readings often times. Also, refrigeration problems are few and far between, compared to other issues like water quality and cleanliness.

Over 75% of ice machines can be repaired with a good thorough cleaning, even in the description you are giving me. So, gonna ask the obvious first, just to be sure. Is the ice machine bringing in hot water, some times they are installed on the wrong water line and those small undercounter machines are prone to not working with hot water. Next, is the machine actually in freeze mode or has it skipped it and went to harvest? Is the evaporator(where the ice forms) frosting or getting cold at all? Is your fan motor running during the freeze cycle? If the machine eventually shuts down, what safety limit is it giving you?

I have model QY0214A ice machine. I have cleaned it and the water still runs but the it does not freeze the ice. On the low side the psi was 145 when the compressor came on within the first 10 sec. then the psi dropped down to 75 or 80. I think it might be low on refrigerant. I have my universal lic. but I am new to working on ice machines and trying to learn. Any advice will truly help

@Austin, that does not seem correct. It’s true that your efficiency will drop, but the machine should still operate below 60 degrees. For example, some Manitowoc under counter machines operate between 40 degrees Fahrenheit and 110 degrees Fahrenheit.

If you give me your model number, I can confirm for sure the published operating limits, in regards to ambient temperature.

We have an undercounter Manitowoc icemaker. We had to replace the compressor on warranty, but the machine does not drop it’s ice properly, and after a few cycles will pop the circuit breaker and shut off. Before the compressor failed, it was leaking water out the door.
The machine is in a church which is unheated much of the time – temperature gets down to the mid 50 deg. F. range. The technician said Manitowoc told them the machine would not work properly at temperatures below 60 deg. F. Can you confirm that this is correct?

@Brian, no problem. It’s possible the compressor cycles, but not necessarily a bad thing. I’d be more concerned with your fan motor. If you are thinking a refrigeration issue, it might be time to call a technician in.

@Dale, do you have any lights on the control board? This will tell us if it’s been kicked off on high head pressure, bad control board, or give us safety limits so we can better pinpoint the problem.

I have verified that the evaporator has been cleaned with the nickel safe cleaner. Please pardon my ignorance before. I am question whether the cooling system is working properly. The compressor cycles on and off quite a bit. Seems like to often to me. Thanks for your patience.

@Brian, I need to make sure we are talking about the same thing. You wouldn’t shine a light through the evaporator, that would be the air condenser. What I was referring to cleaning with the nickel safe is the evaporator, where the ice actually forms on the ice machine. This is what inhibits harvesting properly.

@ Lynn. Checked it this morning and it has cut off again. Guess I may just need to call a tech out. At the end of my rope.

@ Lynn I cleaned the evaporator again thoroughly with the nickel safe, blew it out and shined the light through it to confirm. It was clean. The ice thickness was set just at 1/8" so I adjusted it a little tighter. It has dropped 6 or so times and is running some short harvest (40) seconds and then some longer ones at 3.5 minutes. It has not shut off yet. I will check it in the morning to see if it is off or not. We’ll see.

@Brian, that is too long of a harvest cycle, you will run into problems. I know you’ve stated that you cleaned the evaporator, but this is the most common cause of the issue you are experiencing. I’d would ask that you double check you used a soft nylon brush and nickel safe cleaner, while scrubbing the entire evaporator.

Next, make sure you don’t have any separation around the evaporator, between the frame and evaporator. If the plastic separates at all, then it’s possible you get water freezing behind the evaporator, which will cause the slab of ice to ‘hold on’. You need to check the sides, bottom, and top where it is most common. Replacement of the framing may be necessary.

Also, prob a good idea just to make sure your ice thickness is still set at 1/8", too thick and you’ll have problems.

@ Lynn. After turning the machine back on the freeze cycle initiates and the harvest light flickers randomly.(I assume this is ok but don’t know if this is normal or not) After about 12 minutes the harvest started and stayed on for about 30 seconds. It goes off and after a short pause the freeze cycle starts again. It is forming ice somewhat. After about the third freeze cycle it dropped ice. And stayed in harvest almost exactly 3.5 minutes. (Best I could time). Last freeze cycle took about 15 minutes. Last harvest took 3 minutes 26 seconds. Machine then shut off and harvest light continues to blink. I turned to off and then back to on. The 2 blink code came up again. Thanks for any help you can give me.

@Brian, can you confirm that harvest is taking longer than 3.5 minutes? This will confirm that the machine is actually having problems harvesting or if the bin switch is just failing.

I have a Manitowoc Series 320 Model # BR0320AS Serial # 941161452. It stopped making ice. When I unplug and plug back in it started like normal. Ran 3 cycles making ice and would shut down. I cleaned the evaporator and run a clean cycle. Started back up and now will not make ice at all. All looks normal. The harvest light is flashing the code that signifies longer than 3.5 minute harvest. What do you suggest as my next step?

@Leo, you cannot repair the ice thickness control, but you can clean it. Typically they only fail when they are dirty, which causes the board to not sense properly. Soaking in nickel safe cleaner and using a soft nylon brush is the best way to clean. Make sure you do not scratch the metal or plastic, otherwise it will ruin the probe. Next, make sure the probe is completely dry before plugging back into the board.

In some cases, replacement may still be necessary. The part number you need is a 7601603, which can be found in our store at the link below.

I have a QM45A and its not making ice. everything seems to be working except the sensor probe. i unplugged the sensor probe and it started making ice. is there anything i can do to fix the probe??

@Tony, I would first make sure the sound is coming from the fan motor and not the compressor. If it is the fan motor, it’s not to hard to change, just a tight squeeze. To replace, you would have to actually do it through the front I believe, down past where the air filter is.

If it is the fan motor, we keep it in stock and I would recommend replacement. If it’s squealing, it’s just a matter of time before it locks up. However, I only recommend doing the work yourself if you are comfortable doing so. Below is a link to the fan motor for your ice machine.

We have a Manitowoc model QD0132A 115 Volt ice machine.
For the last 3 days it has made this whaling noise. My guess is it’s the compressor fan going bad. (A) is it going bad and (B) is it easy to replace. Also would I take the back panel off to fix it? Should I fix this myself or just get a repair man?
