How To Tell If A Dump Valve Is Bad July 05 2015, 2 Comments

Dump ValveAs part of our Troubleshooting Manitowoc Ice Machine Series, we will be visiting the water dump valve, found on almost every Manitowoc ice machine made. These valves are extremely common and only come in 2 different varieties. That's right, every dump valve on every Manitowoc ice machine is only 1 of 2 different parts, either 115v or 208-230v. This brief post will share the best way to diagnose the dump valve.

First, the two different dump valves are Manitowoc OEM part number 000001767 for 115v ice machines and 000001768 for 208-230v ice machines. We keep both ice machine parts in stock and are available for standard and rush order shipping. They are also very easy to change, almost anyone can swap out a dump valve on a Manitowoc or Koolaire ice machine.

Manitowoc S Series ice machines are the model of ice makers produced before the current Indigo series.  S model ice machines were an extremely popular series, because of their longevity, ease of cleaning and servicing.  Anyone who owns an S model ice machine, compared to other commercial ice machines, has saved money due to their low maintenance costs.  The SY0454A is one of the more popular models among the S Series and this article covers the most commonly replaced parts.

What makes the SY0454A so popular is how easy it is to repair, clean, and change parts.  The ice machine was designed to allow owners to do a lot of work themselves, saving on expensive service technician visits.  Manitowoc even provides free service literature, to help with diagnostics, and part replacement information.

We have identified 5 of the most common parts to be replaced on an SY0454A.

Manitowoc S Series ice machines are the previous generation models by the leading manufacturer of commercial ice makers.  The S Series boasted ease of maintenance, smooth design, and a focus on efficiency.  These improvements over the previous Q series, allowed Manitowoc to dominate the market.  Features made the S series ice maker one of the easiest machines for an owner to work on themselves.

Because of it’s design, most common components can be removed and changed with nothing more than a screw driver.  By removing two screws on the front of the machine, parts like the water curtain, water pump, ice thickness control, water level probe, and distribution tube can all be changed without any other tools.  The parts are easily accessible and can be changed by ice machine owners with little experience.

Manitowoc Dump Valves - When to Change? September 18 2014, 3 Comments

Manitowoc dump valves come in only 2 different types, a 115v and a 208-230v.  This makes keeping a spare part on hand easier, limiting the amount of stock.  In addition, it makes it easy to know which ice machine part your maker needs, since we only need to identify if you have a 115v ice machine or a 208v machine.  But let's look at why it may be necessary to replace a dump valve on a Manitowoc.

Typically, a dump valve requires replacement if you have a blown fuse.  What happens is that the top of the valve will leak, causing an electrical short.  This blows the fuse on your control board and can only be fixed by replacing the dump valve.  A valve leaking bad enough to cause an electrical short will be obvious, as you will see water spurting from the top of the valve and usually a large amount of calcium build up.  The calcium build up will look similar to the corrosion on a battery terminal in your car.

Manitowoc Dump ValveWhen buying a dump valve for a Manitowoc Ice machine, there are only two choices. For all past and current ice maker models there are only 115v dump valves and 208-230v dump valves. This makes truck stock simple, allowing you to keep only 2 items in stock that will solve and fit all Manitowoc ice machines.

Typically the 115v dump valve will fit all 500lb cubers and smaller. The voltage change happens at 600lb machines and larger, which are then fitted with 208-230v dump valves. There are a few exceptions, like in the Ice Beverage model line up, which can produce 1000lbs of ice or more, but only have a 115v ice maker head. Be sure to look up the part number and voltage of your ice maker before ordering.
